I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. You know why? Because pleasure reading makes me happy, and I’m all about finding things that make me happy and then consistently trying to incorporate them in my life. Here is what i’m reading right now:
TheSkimm: Y’all know the deal. If you want to be in the know on current events, sign up!
Call Your Girlfriend Newsletter, The Bleed: I love my podcasts, and especially these rad ladies Ann and Aminatou. Listen to their podcast and sign up for their newsletter. They are all about female health and being open about menstruation (!!!), hence the title of their newsletter: “The Bleed.”
Present Over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living Shauna Niequist is my girl. Her book Bread & Wine was such a spiritual and emotional journey for me and Present Over Perfect has been no different. I’m reading it very slowly, because 1) I don’t want it to be over and 2) I am trying to meditate and incorporate what she is teaching in my own life. I’ll be sure to write more about it when I’m done.
Woman of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both of Our Hearts This book has been so so good for me and my relationship with the Lord. Jen Wilkins really pushes you to actually know the Bible and and study it. As women, sometimes we base our relationship off of emotions and how we feel. Jen encourages us to remember that the Bible is not about us and how we feel or even how it can be an answer to all the questions in our life. The Bible is a book about the Lord, and we should always want to learn more about Him so that we can be more like Him. #goals
The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs: Respecting and Caring for all of God’s Creations This is a book I just started, but the overall concept really caught my attention. Joel Salatin is a 3rd generation farmer for the Shenandoah Valley and maintains and all organic farm, which he provides food for many families in the area. I heard him and Alice Waters speak last week and it really made an impression on me. Especially as my interest in organic food, and farming has increased over the past few months. I will probably end up writing a whole post about this, but this book in particular is about how we as Christians have been called to be “stewards of the earth” and respect all God’s creations. Instead of manipulating His creations for our own convenience, or potential income, etc.
So many books being read and so much homework being put off, hello 4th year.
I’ve seen such an improvement in my skin over the past 6 months, and I’m excited to share what I’v been doing. Obviously everyone’s skin is different and I have seen many many dermatologists since 6th grade, so if acne is a problem for you I advise you see a doctor too. Your skin is an organ just like other parts in your body, and if something is wrong you should seek help from a doctor. I’ve stopped taking pills I got from the doctor, and I rarely use the ointments given. It’s the other changes I’ve made that I think have led to the most improvement.
Get rid of toxic-stressful people in your life
Y’all this is the number one thing! Stress is not good for your body and for some people like me, it shows on your face. As soon as I stopped interacting with toxic people, and was consistently more happy, my skin cleared up. It seems crazy, but when I first started dating my boyfriend I got many many comments that I was “glowing” and that I “had great skin.”
Use Bio-Oil & Aveeno
Because I’ve had acne since 6th grade, and I’m slightly addicted to popping them in front of the mirror at 10:00 at night, I have been left with many scars. I’ve tried every face wash in the drug store, and many prescribed from the doctor. But for the past 4 months I have been using Aveeno brightening face wash, and Bio-oil as a moisturizer at night and it has greatly reduced the apparent scars. Honestly, I think the Bio-oil is what is making the difference and a little goes a long way so it might seem expensive but it will last.
Drink A LOT of water
It’s simple. Drink water. A glass right when you wake up in the morning, then half your body weight in ounces throughout the day. If you workout or drink obnoxious amounts of coffee you need more.
I wanted to include this on the list, but I’m still unsure of what the long term effects are. I recently visited a new gynecologist and she advised I start birth control to regulate my hormones. She was very surprised that I had visited many other doctors and no one had every recommended birth control for my acne before. I’ve only been on it for a little over a month, but I’m hoping this really ends up being the solution I’ve been looking for since 6th grade.
Do you have any magical solutions? What’s your acne fighting routine?
I’ve said before that I never want to feel like I have to blog, just because. But lately it’s been bothering me that I haven’t written, because….I LIKE BLOGGING! So here we are, and this is what i’ve got for you. An update of ‘Lysse, how i’m doing, and what i’ve been doing. So if you’re nosy keep reading, if you already know my life, then this might be repetitive.
4th Year Yo fourth year is…interesting. To some degree it feels like I’m simply continuing last semester. But that is probably because all but one of my classes are taught by a professor I have had in the past. I’m taking, Race & Ethnic Relations, Adolescent Development, U.S Education Policy, Hip Hop as Technology, and Intro to American Studies. I like my classes, but I already fell senioritis creeping up. Pray for me, y’all.
The Praxis So, I’m supposed to be studying for this test so that I can officially accept my position with Urban Teachers…but fitting this into my schedule has been a #struggle.
The Boy He’s good, we are great and happier than ever. He makes 7hr and 4min drives for me in the middle of the night and i’m thankful. #blessed

Boho Betty Jewelry I’ve partnered with Boho Betty, a great little jewelry company. I’m not a big jewelry person (because I rather spend my money on clothes and food) but I have really enjoyed their pieces. Especially their tassel bracelets and necklaces that are currently all the rage right now. If you find something you like make sure to use the coupon code “lysseonlife” for 15% off your order!
Well guys, thats all I have for you today! I promise I’ll do something fun and write about it soon!
